Seussian Landscape In the Spring of 2006 Google purchased SketchUp and soon after created the 3d Warehouse. This was very motivating. I could now inflict my SketchUp designs on others besides family and friends! This led me to create many new models but there was one in particular that was exceptionally challenging. Last summer I thought I'd try to create a virtual place using SketchUp that had a Seussian feel. I wanted to develop my modeling skills with organic curvy shapes and since there are few right angles in Seuss's buildings I thought it would be a good subject. Remember those wonderful Seussian stairways? I tried those first. Next I worked on houses, and went through a number of iterations before creating the following. A little smurfy perhaps, but I wanted to get on to the pools (it was summer after all). With a vague memory of a Seuss picture that had impossibly placed pools on a hillside with kids diving between them, I forged ahead. I needed a template to help place the pools, stairs and house in a 3-D space so that was the next step. After much more tedious work than I'd planned the last polygon was placed and the result follows. A video walkthrough of the model is available on Google video here.
One last thing. I do a computer orientation at the start of every school year for our new faculty. I was able to make use of the model as an example of the enabling power of computers. Silly as it is, I think it helped them understand. |
