Designing With SketchUp

March & April 2008

4-28-2008 Building Concept

A few closeups of the Vines Building.

4-27-2008 Building Concept

The vine like structures were created for an art/sculpture project. The building concept was an afterthought. I'm waiting for some sunshine to take the pictures needed to complete the sculpture.

4-23-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture - Finishing up Interior Layout

Have completed most of the major internal space division.

4-20-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture - Backdoor Entry

Added a flat-roofed backdoor entryway into a mudroom.

4-19-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture - Entry Variation

Haven't had much free time lately so just some minor experimentation with a flat-roofed entryway.

4-13-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture - Window Seat

A window seat built into a thickened wall.

4-12-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture - Screen Porch

A screen porch. What every green roofed house should have.

4-10-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture - Front Entry

Another entry sketch.

4-9-2008 More Curved Green Roof Architecture

A couple of experimental models. Just working through ideas.

4-6-2008 Eyebrow Dormer For Curved Green Roof

Working out some new "vocabulary" for curved green roofs.

3-25-2008 Leaf Cluster Building V2

I added some sun shades and a curved top.

3-25-2008 Leaf Cluster Building

I'd been mulling over this building for a long time. It is inspired by clusters of oak leaves that I sometimes find on walks during the summer. These clusters often have a strong sculptural/architectural quality to them.

3-25-2008 Recursive Spirals

For some reason I became somewhat obsessed with making recursive spirals for a few days. I DO NOT recommend this exercise. It is time consuming and brain twisting. Seriously.

3-25-2008 TIN Objects

I spent a few days making a bunch of objects out of TINs. I hope to use these objects for some new design ideas in the near future.

3-15-2008 Final "Bridges" on a TIN with Woody Texture

I was so unsatisfied with the first texture I used that I tried something else. This woody texture creates a completely different look.

3-15-2008 Final "Bridges" on a TIN

Last experiment for now with this technique. I'm not particularly pleased with this effort. Oh well, sometimes it just doesn't work. I may play with some different textures on the model and see if I can get something better.

3-12-2008 Curvy Bridges on a TIN

Experimenting again, this time with bridges that curve in the horizontal, as well as the vertical, plane.

3-11-2008 Bridges on a TIN

Experimenting with lifting sections of a TIN away from the main surface.

3-10-2008 Colored Shape

Playing with projected textures... yet again.

3-10-2008 Color Germination

Playing with projected textures on roundish shapes.

3-9-2008 Building to Sculpture

I took the curvy elements from the building below, resized them, and added some textures from images I took of buildings in Paris last summer. I call it "French Couples" because I think the shapes have a Gallic flair.

3-6-2008 Back to a Building

After creating the model just below I thought it would be interesting to try and use abstract curvy sculptural shapes as structural elements in a building. Most of the model was relatively easy to make but the windows proved quite problematic.

3-3-2008 A Break from the Ribbons

The ribbon models are quite tedious to make so I decided to work with simpler TINs for a change. I'm still exploring use of projected images here.

3-2-2008 Ribbon Art with a Theme

Onto ribbon like geometry I projected images from a kayaking day trip I took last August with Laurie. These are all different views of the same model.
