Designing With SketchUp

June 2007

6-25-2007 Art and Architecture - Dialectical Design

I'm enjoying bouncing back and forth between designing virtual 3-D sculpture and fantasy architecture. Work in one area informs work in the other. For example, after creating the sculpture in the image just below, I was inspired to try a building with swooping curved roofs.

I've been playing around with a basic blob like shape that was crafted out of four TINs. From that out came a building and a sculpture.

6-12-2007 Expressionism

I've been shying away from doing any representational artwork with SketchUp but had an idea for a mountain and cloud scene that I thought I'd try. It is more expressionist than abstract, although clearly a little of both. First below is an image of the model pre coloring, and then a view that I like into the model.

6-10-2007 Back to Modeling

I happily spent most of Saturday working on two models. I was doodling on paper Friday night and came up with an idea for three adjacent shapes. Saturday I made a block, intersected it in the three primary planes, removed a lot of geometry around the edges, and added transparent colors in three layers. Below are images of an early stage and the final stage.

6-7-2007 Finished Uploading Images of Existing Models to Lulu

I've finished reviewing my existing models and creating hi-res images of the best of them. This was a tedious task, but perhaps useful in the chance to look over what I've been creating over the past year. I'm looking forward to getting back to creating new models. The image below is from one of my more aggressive intersect periods.

 6-3-2007 First Large-Format Print

On Friday I received a 24" by 36" print from Lulu of Restrained Passions 2. I'd ordered this print to check the quality of the prints that Lulu is producing. The good news is that the image works beautifully at a large scale and the color reproduction is excellent. The bad news is that they make no effort to fit the image to the page so cropping occurred on the left and right margins. They need to fix this or they are going to have a lot of angry customers. Right now their attitude seems to be that is up to the content creator to upload the image with the correct ratio between width and height. I don't think this is a reasonable expectation, and it's an unneeded expectation given the relative ease that solutions can be programmed at their end. For now, I'll upload all new images at a 24 x 36 ratio. At some point, if they don't fix the problem, I'll go back and replace all the images I've already uploaded. Below is a copy of Restrained Passions 2.

5-28-2007 New Directions

I've been working really hard on my SketchUp art. I think I've made some progress and hope that I can devote more time to this medium in the future. To test the waters regarding whether there is a market for my work I'm using Lulu.com to sell high-resolution prints of many of my models.

I believe that long term the best presentation method for SketchUp art is high-resolution video walkthroughs. Dedicating the equipment needed to make this happen -a large LCD monitor, fast computer, and software- is a concept that will take some time for people to embrace. (I'm doing this now and the results are great. I will happily put together custom packages for those wanting to move ahead now.)
